7 Easy Income Streams for a Single Mom Who Wants to Earn a Living
I am a mother and I know first hand how tasking it can be trying to combine career and motherhood. I worked for over seven years, including two years of my married life when I was already a mom and I remember how I would get tired from the combined pressure of carrying out my activities at work, the countless hours I spend in traffic, and the hours spent being a wife and mom.
My daughter suffered the most from the hours I spent at work and in traffic.
There were days when I didn’t get home until 11 pm and she would be fast asleep by then. Then there were weeks I had to work weekends and she would cry as I learnt the house.
One time, I decided to take a one-month leave from work and spent the bulk of this time with her. She was the happiest I’d ever seen and this short time showed me clearly just what my daughter was going through as well as what I’d been missing working my butt off and being able to only give her whatever little time I could spare.
That one-month break was the turning point in my life and showed me clearly what my priorities were.
Working from home can be a great way to earn a paycheck while still giving a considerable amount of time to the people that matter in your life.
These work from home jobs are great for every single mom who has the same or similar goal and the good thing is that you can have one or more of these income streams up and running in no time.
That being said, here are

7 Great Careers Every Single Mom Can Earn Money From
1) Sell Ebooks Online
I discovered book publishing in 2015 and published my first ebook in May of that year. Shockingly (since I never thought anyone would pay for information that can be gotten freely online) I sold the first copy of that book two days after it went live. It was only $.099, but the fact that I could even make a cent from my intellectual skill was enough to make me dig out the creative juice in me and I set to publishing more books.
However, my zeal for publishing started to wane after a while, or should I say I was beginning to find it stressful combining my day job and nighttime writing. Soon, the lack of sleep hours started to tell on me and I decided to take a break.
However, one beautiful thing I noticed during my hiatus is the fact that I continued to earn from the books already published on the Amazon platform. These books continued to sell (one time I sold 15 copies of one of my books in two days) and each month, I get my earnings for the previous two months deposited in my Payoneer account.
As a single mom, book publishing is one great way to make a steady income. Ebook publishing is such an Interesting career option as you can literally make a lot of money from it. There are writers who published a single book and went on to sell several hundred and even thousands of copies of the said book.
Even if writing isn’t your strong suit, you can work around this by getting ghostwriters on any of the freelancing sites out there.
- Fiverr.com
- Probloggers.com/job
- Freelancer.com
However, I should point out that while using ghostwriters will get the job done, this downside to this option is that it is going to set tou back a pretty penny.
Good writers don’t come cheap and if you are going to be hiring a proofreader too, then you would be spendng a little more.
If you decide to see this money spent as an investment (which it truly is), then you won’t feel so discouraged starting. I have books published since 2013 which still earn me some good money till date.
On the other hand, if you are on a budget, but still would like to publish content on the Amazon KDP platform, then a book type you want to consider is low and no content books.
Low or no content books are books like notebooks, journals, diaries, guest books, birthday books, colouring books, etc that contain very little content.
These books are evergreen and sell a lot and you could make a nice amount of money each month publishing them. Publishing these books requires a little bit of designing though before you can get the hang of it. However, you can usually circumvent this by making use of the Canva app or Creative Fabrica to design not just your book interior, but the ecover as well.
I currently have close to fifty low content books on well-researched niches and I make a reasonable amount from the sales of these books month.

2) Venture into Drop-shipping
I haven’t personally tried drop-shipping, but I have a few friends who have and are quite successful at it. If I already wasn’t into several businesses both online and offline, this is one business I would definitely consider.
The drop-shipping business works on a simple logic: you identify a hot-selling product, locate interested buyers then connect to the seller to the buyer and you earn a commission for your time and effort when the sale goes through
There is no limit to how much you can make drop-shipping products and the best part is that you don’t have to bother yourself with the heavy stuff that goes with direct product selling like product storing, inventory, and delivering.
As a single mom, if you decide to go into this business, you can choose to build an eCommerce site to display the products you’d be selling or do so via a whatsapp group which you create just for that purpose.

3) Take a Sewing Course
I learned how to sew in 2005 when I was fresh out of colleger and its one of the best decisions I have made in my life.
This skill has served me greatly over the years as it continues to put money in my pocket. Sewing can be a very profitable career where you get to make 100 -300% profit.
Let me say though, that unlike most careers you can start as a single mom with very little training, I strongly recommend you get trained professionally for this career.
You would also need to spend a considerable amount of time honing your skill to a professional level as that is the only time you can earn from it..
4) Join One or More Freelance Writing Sites
This is yet another career you should consider as a single mom.
I used to actively write for a few freelancing sites online including
- Freelancer.com
- Fiverr.com
- Zemandi.com
- Channels.cc (defunct)
And earned a steady amount of money. The beauty of these sites is that I worked on them remotely, which gave me ample time as I was pregnant and sick at the time.
You can choose to write for one or more of these sites. However, you might want to consider a few things including their payment rates, medium of payment, and how genuine or timely they are with payment before choosing to sign up on any.

5) Run a Blog
Blogging is HARD work. I just had to put that out there so you know what you are getting into if you do decide to opt for this career as a single mom.
Can you make money from blogging?
H*ell, yes! Lots of it. However, you would need to put in a lot of man-hours at the beginning before you can even begin to see any earnings. Ince the money starts coming though, it never stops.
Blogging is a sweet, sweet way to earn passive income and there are so many ways you can earn from your blog once you start getting a steady influx of traffic.
- Affiliate marketing
- Google Adsense or any other high-earning ad program
- Direct advert placement
- Sponsored posts
- Guest posting (not moral, but still a way to make money
Ideally, it should take a new blog at least six months of intense hard and committed work to start to get the kind of traffic that can make you money (it takes around 90 days for blog posts to gain enough traffic in search engines and start to rank), however, these are the days of smart work, not just hard work and even a brand new site can start to get massive traffic using Pinterest and one or more social media tool.
Pinterest will rank top of the list for content marketing though as it is a search engine with an estimated 360 million active monthly visits, with over 80% of it’s users got and ready to take actions after viewing a pin.
Getting success from your blog quickly will be a lot more possible when you acquire blogging knowledge and secrets of successful bloggers before you.

6) Run a Daycare Center
If you love kids, then what better way to live out this love than to run a daycare center.
Starting and running a daycare is not as easy as it sounds though as you’d have to put a few things in place including drafting a good business plan (or getting someone to do so for you), getting the required certifications, looking for the right facility, hiring trained and competent staff to mention but a few.
However, this is one business that offers a lot of returns including the joy and satisfaction you will get caring for kids who have been entrusted into your care.
7) Go Into Graphics Designing
Lastly, if none of the above-mentioned income streams is to your liking, then yet another you could try out as a single mom is graphics design.
Graphics designing requires you to get trained, but once you do, there is no limit to how much you can make each month.
